Individual J-Term: Brookwood Day 1

Today was the first day of my internship at Brookwood. Arriving on campus at 10:30 am and being welcomed by Mr. Anthony and Ms. Racheal. Anthony is the pastor/director of spiritual development. Rachael was/is in charge of orienting me on the policies and guidelines. After introductions, Anthony and I went to Popeyes for lunch and to better get to know each other.

Next, we headed to a meeting with the senior staff on campus about demoing an experimental training program on "Effective Communication Strategies." Led by John, this was specifically about how we can use and improve upon our language to improve quality of life, build rapport and trust, and prevent/de-escalate crises for and with citizens. This was a very insightful meeting. Understanding their reasoning around their careful use of language, tone, verbiage, and redirection. This truly shows how no practice within Brookwood is by accident. Once that meeting was complete, Anthony went over with me the vision, goals, values, language, and philosophy of Brookwood's ministry and their spiritual ministry. Giving me insight into the intention behind cultivating a Christ-centered community. This is done through spiritual life rhythms such as daily prayers, devotionals, Sunday worship, open conversations about faith, and the importance of living one's faith out.

I next participated in one of Brookwood's after-work activities. This one, in particular, was music trivia and dancing. Here, citizens would guess the song being played, and each would do a particular dance (if comfortable) for the group. I was pushed out of my comfort zone by Greggy, the leader of this activity, having me copy the dance each citizen did. After making a quick stop by the house I would be staying at, meeting the 11 other guys and the three house supervisors, we went to the run-through talent show. This was in preparation for the talent show all citizens put together for family, friends, donors, and all those who love Brookwood. I assisted Greggy in running the lights and sound and assisting those who needed help getting on the stage. Overall, my greatest assistance was comic relief. Everyone couldn't believe my lack of musical knowledge!

In conclusion, this has been an incredible day. Full of meeting new people, learning, and having lots of fun!
